bbPress Voting Pro vs. Free: When to Upgrade

I built bbPress Voting to add straightforward upvotes and downvotes to bbPress forums. The free version is a complete voting system, and it is the right fit for plenty of communities. I also make bbPress Voting Pro, which adds tools for forums that need more control over how voting works.

What the Free Version Gives You

The free bbPress Voting plugin is not a limited demo — it’s a fully functional voting system. Here’s what’s included:

Where Free Hits Its Ceiling

The gap between free and Pro shows up in three areas:

The free version sorts by raw vote count. A topic with 2 votes posted 5 minutes ago ranks the same as a topic with 2 votes posted 3 months ago. The Pro version adds time-decay sorting — a topic that got 3 votes today ranks higher than one that got 5 votes a year ago. This is how Reddit, Hacker News, and every modern content platform handle ranking.

If your forum has any real volume, time-decay sorting makes a huge difference in keeping discussions alive instead of buried under old content.

2. Voter Reputation & Profiles

Pro adds a voting history to each user’s profile. You can see which posts someone voted on, whether they’re mostly upvoting or downvoting, and their overall reputation score. This is gold for community moderation — you can spot troublemakers by their voting patterns before they become a real problem.

3. Shortcodes & Custom Displays

Pro gives you shortcodes to display “top this week,” “most controversial,” and “lowest rated” content anywhere on your site. You can build a leaderboard page, highlight quality contributors, or show a “rising discussions” widget in your sidebar. The free version has no shortcodes — it’s the forum or nothing.

Upgrade when you hit one of these real-world situations:

Your forum has 50+ active members and discussions are getting buried. Time-decay sorting alone is worth the price — it keeps fresh discussions visible without you manually bumping them.
You want to gamify participation. If you’re pairing bbPress Voting with GamiPress (like I covered in this post on GamiPress), Pro’s reputation data feeds right into achievement triggers.
You need shortcodes. Want a “top contributors this week” box on your homepage? Pro is the only way.
Vote abuse is happening. Pro’s rate limiting stops a single user from creating 50 accounts to upvote their own posts.
You want to highlight your best contributors. Pro gives you the data to build leaderboards, badges, and recognition systems.

When to Stay Free

Don’t upgrade if:

Your forum is new or small (<20 active members)
You only need basic voting — no sorting sophistication
You’re on a tight budget and the free version covers your actual needs
You’re just evaluating whether voting works for your community

Pretty cool, huh? The free version is genuinely good enough to start with. Don’t feel pressured to pay for features you won’t use.

One thing I appreciate: the developer doesn’t force you into a subscription model. You buy once, you own the license for that version. Updates for that major version are included.

My Take

Start with free. Give your forum 30-60 days to build real activity. Then ask yourself: are old posts dominating? Do I want to reward top contributors? Do I need shortcodes?

If the answer to any of those is yes, Pro is worth it. The time-decay sorting alone has made a noticeable difference in every forum I’ve implemented it on — discussions stay alive longer, and quality content gets surfaced instead of buried.
